Bespoke best-practice solutions to take a multinational mobile

Tate & Lyle have locations all over the world and a diverse range of employees. Their new corporate intranet and websites had already started development but the existing design did not accommodate their mobile users’ needs. An update was needed.

The brief

We were initially consulted on mobile best practices, technological potential and caveats, in order to produce a mobile-friendly adaptation for the intranet. The new mobile system had to work with the existing infrastructure (built on SharePoint 2007 and Active Directory) while bringing a high degree of polish, brand sensitivity, and above all else usability. The corporate smartphone demographic meant our design had to meet the expectations of BlackBerry as well as iPhone users.

What we did

We led a deep discovery stage with Tate & Lyle, focusing heavily on user personas to establish clear content prioritisation. We recommended that all desktop content must be accessible – via an easily traversable, scalable navigation system – while all being wrapped up in a mobile-specific UI that provided the exact tools and information that are most needed on the road.

The warmly received research and deliverables for the mobile intranet fed into a second wave of work, where we enhanced Tate & Lyle’s entire public-facing ecosystem of websites and microsites to be mobile-friendly, smart and completely responsive.

Starting with clickable wireframes we drafted out the essential architecture, putting great focus on finding details on people and locations in the form of an ever-present priority navigation we called the “turbo nav”. This advanced interface was designed to feel familiar to mobile users and leveraged native information such as location.

As we iterated the design, the wireframe was gradually enhanced into a visual prototype so the client could ‘feel’ how the interface worked and test features amongst their staff. 

For the public-facing sites we built heavily on this methodology. Deliverables included artwork, technical spec and a finely styled and completely responsive prototype, which demonstrated best practices and the latest techniques for the in-house development team to implement with confidence.

The results

Our success lay in designing a product that met everyone’s expectations, from corporate communications and brand guardians to techies and board members. We were transparent and communicative, choosing to demo our work in person and on-device at regular intervals. 

Thanks to our broad-minded client, we even managed to achieve a stylish balance between brand (reinforcing identity) and device convention (enhancing usability).
